Job Title: Machinist B

Effective Date: 7/22/99

Job Summary:
Remanufacture, rebuild or repair mechanical components of electric motors or parts of motors using a variety of machines, presses, mills, and other equipment under direct supervision.

Work Performed:

  • Inspect parts of motor and record and compare to tables of standards.
  • Interpret simple drawings of components
  • Repair, rebuild, or remanufacture part or motor utilizing appropriate machines or tools under direct supervision
  • Clean part/motor and sign off as completed task
  • May be assigned to disassemble motor or part
  • Assure proper sizing of all components, subject to verification by supervisor
  • Perform milling operations such as drilling, tapping, boring, and conventional milling and lathe work. Set up may be by supervisor.
  • Balance mechanical assemblies using dynamic balancing equipment under direct supervision to a table of standards
  • Machine threads in shafts
  • Maintain work area in neat and clean condition as directed by supervisor

Education Required:

  • High School diploma or GED. Vocational/trade school, military, or machine shop on-the-job training

Training Required:

Certification/Licensure:

  • None required

Experience Required:

  • At least one year as apprentice machinist

Knowledge Required:

  • Mechanical principles
  • Knowledge of all shop equipment including balancer, cranes, forklift, drill press, bench and hand press, mill, vertical and horizontal press, hand and power tools, micrometer, lathe up to 17" swing, various measuring devices

Skills Required:

  • Use of mathematics and algebra to solve problems
  • Read and write in English
  • Read blueprints/drawings
  • Able to read micrometers in .0001" graduations

  • Work conducted in machinist shop environment, with areas that are clean and others that are dusty and dirty

  • Work with hazards such as moving equipment and machines, fumes, shop dust, and metal chips
  • Safety/protective equipment sometimes required, including eye and ear protection, gloves
  • Frequent use of hand and power tools
  • Frequent use of drills, presses, cranes, mill, micrometer, balancer, lathes, forklift
